First of all you should know that you cannot put just any fish in your aquarium. In 50 liter aquariums, it will not be possible to put large fish or too many fish, a nano aquarium is much easier to pollute.

Some fish, even if they are small, need a large space that a nano aquarium cannot provide. For example, red noses and most loaches should be avoided. We will therefore present you the ideal species to start aquaristics in a nano aquarium.

Fighter

Size : about 5 cm

Number : 1

The Betta Splendens is able to live in a small volume habitat. The males of this species cannot live together, so you can only have one male fighter fish in your aquarium. Male and female fighters can live together but we recommend a fairly large volume.

To reproduce their living conditions as well as possible, we advise you to recreate a biotope of rice fields in your aquarium which will be ideal for your little protégé.

Guppys

Size : about 4 cm

Number : 2 minimum (1 male for 3 females)

Guppies must live in a group to be happy. However, be careful because guppies reproduce easily. We generally recommend 1 male for 3 females if you have room for new births.

In a nano of about 20 liters we advise you to choose only 2 males to avoid being overwhelmed by new births, otherwise your guppies might quickly become cramped and unhappy.

We recommend a nano aquarium rich in plants and hiding places that will make them happy. For the water temperature, choose a heater that keeps the water at 24 to 25°C.

Concerning the maintenance, a change of water of a quarter of the volume of your aquarium every 2 weeks. Cleaning the filter once a month should be sufficient.

Boraras brigittae

Size: about 3 cm

Number : 6 minimum

The boraras brigittae lives in schools in its natural state, it will be necessary for its well-being to keep its habits, we recommend at least 6 boraras brigittae in your aquarium.

Accustomed to dense vegetation, your aquarium should be well planted so that it feels at ease as in its natural environment. For the temperature of the water, the boraras is not demanding you will have to maintain the water from 24 to 28°C.

Microrasbora galaxy

Size: about 3 cm

Number : 6 minimum

The microrasbora galaxy lives only in group. We recommend a minimum of 10 microrasbora galaxy for a nano aquarium of 40-50 liters.

It will need an aquarium rich in plants and hiding places to feel at ease, it is a predator of micro-insects. For the temperature of the water, choose a heater maintaining the water from 24 to 26°C.

Cap lopez

Size: about 3 cm

Number : 2

The cape lopez lives in duo, if you take a male we recommend you to take two females. We recommend a minimum of 10 microrasbora galaxy for a nano aquarium of 20 liters minimum.

It will need an aquarium rich in plants and hiding places to feel at ease, it is a predator of micro-insects. For the temperature of the water, choose a heater maintaining the water from 18 to 23°C.

Conclusion

We have listed 5 main species but the number of possibilities for a nano aquarium are much larger. Apart from fish, you can also keep crustaceans and mollusks in your nano aquarium. Make sure you are well informed before you start your aquarium adventure.
